Our Day In San Antonio

San Antonio is a fascinating city.  First its full of history and second its got so much culture !  We had a great time there today. I wish I could share all my pictures from the River Walk...its just beautiful.

The Alamo was of course something we needed to go see. If you are into Davy Crockett, this is the place for you. Linda and I roamed the gardens looking at cactus more than anything...the guys were enjoying the fort itself.

Near the Alamo is a strip mall and we were actually looking for a Mexican restaurant that is said to be excellent but the only one we found has been converted into a gift shop.  Anyway, we did come across a store that specializes in toy soldiers.  I was captivated by them, I think from an artistic stand point.  The intricate details of each figurine was amazing to me.  A little bitty figure of General Custer was $32.  Anyway, I snapped some pictures of the displays and you can see what I mean. 

River Walk was next. Their are a host of restaurants to choose from on the walk and so we finally settled on one and it was very nice.  After we ate we strolled the River Walk and took pictures.  Its just beautifully landscaped and full of life.  Romantic is what came to mind for me.

Our table was on the waters edge and we were enjoying the ducks in the water.  We were amazed at how people friendly the ducks and birds are.  I managed to get this close up picture of this bird because he was eating out of Henry's hand.  Henry would hold a piece of tortilla chip and the bird would land and take it from Henry's hand. 

We looked down and found this little guy roaming around at our feet !  His mother was in the water and kept looking up onto the sidewalk at him. 

While we were walking we noticed this squirrel having a berry and he was just so into his lunch he could not be bothered with us so I was able to get his picture close up too !

It was a really good day...again I am thinking of my mother and the trip I took with her some years ago.  We went to River Walk too but we had fish and chips there and I actually saw the restaurant that we went too.  I am enjoying Texas so much !  xxoo TML

I think we will like San Marcos !

We arrived in San Marcos just a while ago...we are setting up and its laundry day so that is just about as exciting as it will get ! Our campground is not a state park so we get a few more amenities than normal and we like that.  We have nice sites and a great bathhouse/laundry room.  Cable TV and WiFi.  Yep, we are living high off the Texas hog this week !!

Good time to show you the sticker map we are creating on our trip !This map is on the inside of our RV Door and we get to add a sticker for every state we camp in.  Its silly but its also fun and RV's all have them.  I am sure my aunt and uncle have one that has all the stickers on it...the Monday's too.  Anyway this is ours.  xxoo TML

Diane, George and Fruitcake Heaven !

My friend, Janet Allen, had told me about Diane Rose the amazing quilter in Waco Texas.  One of the news shows did a story on her and she has become fairly well known as a result.  Why?  Because she is blind !  This woman makes the most beautiful quilts, hand and machine sewn.  Here is the link to her website and you can see the story that aired on television, see her quilts and you can even email her. http://theamazingquilter.com/

We put her address into our GPS and ended up at her house.  She was gracious enough to let us purchase some of her goods and I got a picture of her.  She was in curlers because she has a speaking engagement this afternoon.  She is a hoot...very nice and full of energy !  Notice that we were in the room where the news piece was filmed.  Here she is, Diane Rose-The Amazing Quilter

Okay, just down the street in Waco we happened across Collins Street Bakery, which Linda and Henry knew about because they get a fruit cake from them every year at Christmas. We got a sample and it was pretty delicious and I don't care much for fruit cake. 

Okay, we finally left Waco and headed to College Station, where we will camp tonight. We pulled in just at 2PM and had to jump out of our RVs and into a tow car so we could get to the Bush Presidential Library in time.  We made it and boy was this a nice library, Reagan's is still my favorite but this is right there too.  I took a slew of pictures and its hard to choose which ones to share on the blog. 

So, tomorrow we head to San Marcos...located between Austin and San Antonio.  Its very hot and windy here and Texas is in a severe drought situation.  We are doing well, RVs are running good and we are still having a great time.  xxoo  TML

The Happiest Mothers Day !

Hanging out at the campground today and not expecting to see much more than a few family reunions and Mothers Day picnics but that was not the case !  Within the state park is an old farm that was once a working and self sustaining complex called Penn Farm. We walked around it just for the heck of it, thought we would get some exercise !

We were driving back to our campsite when we noticed some tents....off we went and there we discovered a 250 mile charity bike run from Austin to our campground.  Proceeds will go to the Children's Hospital in Dallas.  Anyway, we got to see the bikers cross the finish line ! Now this is at noon and its already in the 90's here, so I can only imagine how happy these riders were to see that finish line and get to that buffet in the tent ! 

Hope everyone had a great day....tomorrow we are moving south...through Waco and on to College Station !  Have a great Mothers Day !  I know I am...I got the most wonderful messages today, one in particular and I am on top of the world !  Not to mention having Joe and Henry cooking for Linda and I all day...I love this !  xxoo TML



Now This Is Camping !!

Check out this homemade chuck wagon.  These people are slinging pots and pans and gutting fish for dinner and they are really doing it right !  We just love to walk by and see what they are doing next...dont miss their clothesline, where she hangs the kitchen towels !  You see the neatest things in campgrounds !!

A 1000 Dealers, a Billion Bargains !

Trader's Village is a flea market spread over 120 acres and boy do they have the goods.  We saw furniture, animals, cars, car parts, hardware, software and everything in between, including roasted corn for sale.  We could not believe how much their was to see and buy there.  All of us felt pretty good about our bargains...my find was a Corning ware baking dish for 50 cents !  So that was our morning and then we hung out at our campground to play cards !  Very nice day...hot, hot here in Texas !
